I was hearing about a civil war going on in El Salvador at the bus stop today. El Salvador is a tiny Central American nation that is currently undergoing many troubles. Their archbishop was even assassinated on this very day! I'm grateful my country isn't going through this. My father believes that El Salvador's isn't even a big deal. Will their war have an affect in any other country in any way?
Chaos has entered my city along with the entire nation. My sister told me it was a rumor, but apparently a new diseases has been found and is spreading quickly. We were told that this disease is spread mostly through intercourse and needles. They call it AIDS. I know I shouldn't be too worried about getting it, but all the panic amongst everyone is scaring me. Will AIDS continue to affect the country from now till forever?
It's that time again... The Olympics are being hosted this year in Moscow, Russia. Even though my family has a slight dislike for Russia because of all the cold relations it has had with the U.S., we are still more than excited to watch the sports and games. I find it pretty cool that Moscow is hosting it. Will the U.S. be good sportsmen in Moscow this year?
I am so upset! Reporters and press are running around the streets talking about the assassination of John Lennon. He was my mom's favorite member of the Beatles. He was on his way back to his apartment in New York with his wife, when suddenly a man named Mark Chapman came out of no where and shot Lennon. The news shocked everyone. Will John Lennon's legacy live on even after his death?
Here we go again, yet another new president. My uncle constantly complains about all the fast paced changes with the government and our leaders. I personally think we should continue to improve the country, even if that means a new president. President Reagan used to be an actor, and then California's governor. He pressures the U.S. to end the Cold War. Will our new president keep his word and really end the war?
Talking about the Iranian crisis really freaks me out. A few years back, a group of Iranian students formed a U.S. Embassy and took over 60 American hostages. After being held captive for 444 days, the remaining hostages were released today. My grandfather finds it strange that this happened then same day President Reagan was elected. Did the presidential election have anything to do with the Iranian hostage crisis ending?
My brother and sister won't stop arguing over this new action movie that came out today. It's an Indiana Jones movie, called Raiders of The Lost Ark. Little do they know that I've already seen this movie with my friends today. It was filled with adventure and suspense! Plus it was directed by Steven Spielberg, so that explains why it wasn't a disappointment. When will the next Indiana Jones movie come out to theaters?
Finally!!! Music and television all in one! A new channel was released today on television called MTV (music television). One of my favorite songs, Video Killed The Radio Star, was the first music video to be played on MTV. My sister and I were sitting in front of the TV with our eyes glued to the screen. Will MTV always be playing just music on their channel?
My father was listening to the radio this morning and I heard one particular song that a really enjoyed. It's called Come On Eileen, by Dexy's Midnight Runners. It's been stuck in my head ever since I listen to it. My father thinks it's an annoying song! It first came out in the UK, then made its way to the U.S. and other parts of the world. This song has been a hit for a while now. I wonder how much music will change in the following years to come?
The rights for women have been yet again reintroduced this year. There is a lot of question as to what will happen if congress passes the equal rights amendment again. However, so many women across the country have been fighting for equality for all genders for so many decades. My mother takes a big part in protesting and working hard for equality. Will the government finally give in and put a stop to unfairness towards women?
